The Strokes frontman talked about recording his solo album, Phrazes for the Young, in Los Angeles, New York, and Omaha, Nebraska, which he described as a surprisingly “hip” town. The album and its songs were inspired by Oscar Wilde’s Phrases and Philosophies for the Use of the Young, and include advice that Casablancas said he wished he’d had when he was a fifteen year old.

Casablancas was especially excited to talk about the song “Boombox” he did with The Lonely Island for their album Incredibad, and spoke of how thrilled he was to film the SNL digital short for it. Casablancas even played his cover of SNL’s classic, “I Wish It Was Christmas Today” during his encore at the show last night. Overall the singer, who said his recent obsession with his digital Casio guitar has earned him the nickname Casioblancas, seemed pretty stoked for the first night of his tour.

Musician Julian Casablancas, lead vocalist for The Strokes, is coming out with a solo album to debut in the United States on November 3. The first single off the album, Phrazes For The Young, has been released and is available on the singer’s MySpace page, as well as for download via iTunes. The single, “11th Dimension,” features Casablancas distinct vocals but set to a more electronic boppy tune than is heard on his work with The Strokes. Definitely check it out.
