Andrew Bird and St. Vincent leave Lupo’s crowd momentarily speechless…

Last Tuesday night (not a typical concert-night for many concert- goers) at Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel in downtown Providence, a highly-pleased crowd was treated to a phenomenal performance by the very talented Andrew Bird and opener St. Vincent. To start things off, St. Vincent, fronted by the endearing Eddie Clarke and her guitar and lovely vocals, provided the venue with a thumping bass and drum as well as an eclectic mix of other instruments. The overall sound was impeccable live- even more so than on studio albums of the band’s- and captivated the audience. It was a perfect set-up for the main act of Andrew Bird. The man’s whistling was astonishing, as usual, and immediately drew the audience in. The crowd was dead-silent until the rest of the band joined in and more instruments complemented the violin– a wide range of guitars, horns, bass, drums, strings, and other instruments graced the show (including some rather ornamental objects as well). These various implements of artistry, much improvising by Bird, and a beautifully heartfelt Dylan cover-duet with Clarke made the night especially delightful. Although it was St. Vincent who opened for Andrew Bird, the show felt as if it were a combination of the two different but highly compatible talents working in synch and producing beautiful sounds. Everything was spot-on- a good, long show, a diverse range of song choices and musical tactics chosen, as well as a charming group of artists all combined to provide a wonderfully satisfying Tuesday night.
