Concert Review: Taking Back Sunday at House of Blues 6/27

There’s something incredibly satisfying about collapsing into a bed after a concert, completely exhausted, ears ringing and vocal cords no longer functioning. You know you should shower, but you don’t have the energy because you spent it all at the show. This was how I felt when I got back from the Taking Back Sunday concert, held at the House of Blues in Boston on Saturday night. In their last stop on the New Again tour, the band claimed it was their best tour ever. “I don’t want this tour to end. I don’t want this show to end,” lead singer Adam Lazzara proclaimed during the encore. But the Taking Back Sunday members were not the only ones feeling nostalgic about the end of the tour. Both openers Envy on the Coast and Anberlin made it clear they felt the same way. During the show, the bands thanked each other and exchanged group hugs and bottles of alcohol. And their enthusiasm showed: all three bands put on unbelievably energetic performances. Taking Back Sunday put on an especially good show. As an old-school fan, I was afraid of a set dominated by songs off of “New Again.” Don’t get me wrong, the new album is great (you can check out Cathy’s review of it here). But I still wanted to hear a mix of songs from their early albums. And that’s exactly what TBS delivered. Opening up the show with “You Know How I Do,” the band set the tone for the rest of the show. They selected all the right tracks from their four album discography and led a crowd of 2,500 screaming fans. Playing older hits like, “A Decade Under the Influence,” “One-Eighty By Summer,” and “Cute Without the ‘E’ (Cut From the Team),” with newer material like “Sink Into Me,” “Lonely, Lonely,” and “Everything Must Go,” the band created a well-rounded set that both new and old fans could enjoy. It’s no wonder this band consistently sells out Boston shows; they know how to deliver. If you have a hard time hearing my voice on the radio this week, there’s good cause for it. I just don’t have the kind of vocal stamina Adam Lazzara does.
