After taking a few-month-long hiatus to ensure that we never had to write a blurb about “Kids” or “Sex on Fire” again, here’s a sneak peek into the hits that are sure to be the soundtrack to your summer.
15. Linkin Park – New Divide
- This song, which is the theme for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, is helping the movie become one of the biggest summer blockbusters yet.
14. Placebo – For What It’s Worth
- The first single off their 2009 album Battle for the Sun.
13. Rancid – Last One To Die
- This energetic song is, according to the band, all about the survival and continuation of Rancid. “Over the last eighteen years we’ve seen a lot of bands and friends pass on, quit or move on for various reasons, yet we keep moving forward.”
12. Rise Against – Audience of One
- From what I saw at Bamboozle, it’s the most crowd-pleasing song in Rise Against’s repertoire. Though if they really only had an audience of one, that wouldn’t be too hard.
11. Death Cab for Cutie – Grapevine Fires
- A slow, refreshing summer hit that is to your ear as a freeze pop is to your mouth.
10. Anberlin – Feel Good Drag
- When they’re not playing Frisbee with us or inviting us to their soundchecks, Anberlin finds the time to rock hard. Really hard.
9. Franz Ferdinand – No You Girls
- Which of this song’s two videos is your favorite? (Version 1 / Version 2) Let us know in the comments.
8. Incubus – Black Heart Inertia
- Incubus is no stranger to hits, spanning from 2001’s “Drive” up through “Anna Molly,” “Love Hurts” and this latest single, which won’t disappoint their fans.
7. Kings of Leon – Use Somebody
- The slower half brother of “Sex On Fire” with half the innuendo but twice the soul. Also worth checking out is the follow-up single, “Notion.”
6. Silversun Pickups – Panic Switch
- This song made the Silversun Pickups the first independent band since 1998 to hit #1 on the Billboard chart for modern rock.
5. Green Day – Know Your Enemy
- The first single from 21st Century Breakdown proves that Green Day has not changed its powercharged punk sound or its political mindset since the days of American Idiot.
4. Cage The Elephant – Ain’t No Rest For the Wicked
- Those 18 and over are invited to join us on August 2nd for WBRU’s second Summer Concert Series show of the year, featuring this band along with The Airborne Toxic Event, Metric and a very special guest. For even more of a good time, our third show, an all-ages affair featuring the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Catch-22, is on August 14th.
3. Ida Maria – I Like You So Much Better When You’re Naked
- As you should, Ida. As you should.
2. Manchester Orchestra – I’ve Got Friends
- This band + Silversun Pickups + Cage The Elephant = one mindblowing summer tour. It won’t be coming to the Northeast, but we can still drool over its alt-rock glory.
1. Taking Back Sunday – Sink Into Me
- A standout on its own as well as part of a really good album, this song will be played on BRU plenty of times this summer to get you through the sweltering heat (and…rain?) with the help of its wicked guitar work and Adam Lazzara’s angsty vocals.
