Rock Hunt Profile #4: Fairhaven, Sean P. Rogan & Far Off Place

Here they are. The final group of Rock Hunt Semifinalists. Ready to fight for your love at the Wheelhouse this Saturday.l_2814baa3d11f4290b1cda7cd6ad130f3

Fairhaven

Fairhaven, stealing their namesake from the infamous Fairhaven Road in Cumberland RI (I’m guessing without the road’s permission), is a group of RI natives that got some alternative soul. They sport a kind of ballad-rock that gives a grateful nod to Incubus, maybe even Coldplay, so rest assured, their music will move you. Plus they claim to give out free EPs at every show! Sean P. Rogan

It’s the guy from Big D and the Kid’s Table! Sounding nothing like his band (oh and don’t be alarmed, Big D didn’t break up), Mr. Rogan has mastered the art of folksy singer-songwriter mellow acoustic chillout. According to the man himself, his music is “good to fall asleep to,” but his song “Stomach Growlin’” makes me hungry, not sleepy. Photo by Myspace.

Far Off Place

Far Off Place

With a new album engineered by the same guy that did John Lennon and U2, Far Off Place bring us back to the 60’s with some consciously-retro psychedelic rock. But they’re modern too! Imagine Jefferson Airplane, but with cell phones. See them on Saturday and maybe you’ll forget what decade it is. Photo by Myspace.

  1. First of all, I would like to congratulate Fat Off Place for an excellent show last night at the Wheelhouse.

What criteria were the so called ‘judges; using to gauge the winner of the semifinalist titile? It was clear that Far Off Place had stronger crowd response – as well as a much tighter overall sound.

I guess that tight rythm structure, lyrical hooks, talent and general badassness does not have a part within today’s ‘Alt’ rock scene – at least the one that your station promotes.

Perhaps you’ve decided that you can make more of a profit through promoting Fairhaven – I don’t know.

I just want to let you know that you’ve lost a listener. I alwsys thought that a lot of your music was gutless – now I’m just totally disgusted.

  2. I would have to agree with jeverich. It should definatly not be considered a “rock hunt” Far Off Place is more rock than i’ve heard in a long time. There crowd response was amazing, the songs are most definatly well rehersed, thought out hits, stage presence and musicianship was undeniably tight, yet (and not to take away from the winners) they lost to an unoriginal non rock sound. you should call it the alternative money machine hunt. All I could think after I heard the winners announced was that if any of the rock gods from the past were judges Far Off Place would have stole the show, and would be winners at lupos. you not only lost a listener but you lost a chance to promote one of the best local rock bands of our time.
