.What's Playing on WBRU

WBRU’s October Playlist

After a week of numerous new releases, and before Christmas shopping (OK maybe not yet, but still), here is WBRU’s playlist of the month, full of all our favorite songs, for your own enjoyment!

Kings of Leon- Sex on Fire

  • Although the lyrics are slightly repetitive, this is some great passionate alt-rock. If the guitars don’t get you jumping, then Caleb Followill’s voice will entrance you.

The Offspring- You’re Gonna Go Far, Kid

  • What a comeback! After “Hammerhead”, the band hit the airwaves hard once again with their unchanging, inimitable, unforgiving style.

Weezer- Troublemaker

  • Lead singer Rivers Cuomo said this song was heavily influenced by Eminem, but rock fan out there, do not fret : “Troublemaker” is so powerful you will want to make some of your own.

One Day As a Lion- Wild International

  • If One Day As a Lion wasn’t already hotly tipped for the end of this year, this track would do the trick. A new genre of its own, between rock, hip-hop and electronica.

Rise Against- Re-Education (Through Labor)

  • This song will appear on the next Guitar Hero (out Sunday), and that says it all. Get ready to love it, know it by heart, and play it (guitar, drums or otherwise).

Smashing Pumpkins- G.L.O.W.

  • Ever since their reunion album last year, the Pumpkins have been providing exciting hard-alt-rock for all those die-hard fans from the 90’s. I wouldn’t be surprised if a few new ones showed up after listening to this track.

Coldplay- Viva la Vida

  • Call it “commercial rock”, but Chris Martin & Co.’s latest single is undeniably imaginative and successful (first No.1 British band on the Billboard 100 since the Spice Girls?!).

Death Cab for Cutie- Cath…

  • Death Cab’s second single from “Narrow Stairs” only confirms this album as one of the band’s best. A light-headed and awesome morning wake-up song.

Paramore- Decode

  • Another strong pop-rock delight from Paramore. Catch it on the novel-based movie Twilight out November 21st.

Kaiser Chiefs- Never Miss a Beat

  • A year after their last single, the Chiefs will inevitably get you to your feet with this fast-paced, party-starting release.

Jack White & Alicia Keys- Another Way to Die

  • The White Stripes meets Alicia Keys; a do-not-miss hit that you’ll want to hear over and over. All you’ll have to do is go see Quantom of Solace, out November 14th.

The Killers- Human

  • Despite the peculiar lyrics, “Mr. Brightside” fans will fall in love with this new track. For others, reflect on critics calling it “a Boss-like melody over a New Order-injected rave-up”.

MGMT- Kids

  • Picture yourself lying on the beach, looking at the stars, slightly inebriated, with the sound of a rave behind you. That’s what MGMT will get you feeling on this new single.

Beck- Gamma Ray

  • Beck’s 25th (!!) single, like so many others, is similar to an indian summer : sunny and warm, calm and bright, welcome and refreshing. You’ve gotta love it.

Franz Ferdinand- Lucid Dreams

  • What, a new FF album?!” Yes, and this first single will blow away all your expectations. I can’t wait for January 26th!

  1. Anberlin “New Surrender”, first album on Universal. Much more accessible than their previous albums, amazing vocals by Stephen Christian & the first single “Feel Good Drag” is not staying under the radar for much longer.
